Sapporo White Illumination 2026–2027: Dates, Lighting Hours, and How to Visit by Car

Every winter, central Sapporo lights up for the Sapporo White Illumination — Japan's oldest illumination event, now in its 46th year. The official English name for this season is 2026 Sapporo White Illumination, and it runs from November 20, 2026 at six venues, with a seventh being added in January 2027.

Here is the thing most English-language guides get wrong: there is no single end date. Some venues close on Christmas Day, others glow until mid-March. If you arrive in February expecting the famous Odori Park displays, they will have been gone for six weeks. This guide gives you the venue-by-venue dates, the actual lighting hours, and — because Hokudora is a driving site — exactly how the car logistics work, down to the closing time of the car park under the main venue. 1. The 2026–2027 dates, venue by venue (there is no "one date")

All venues switch on together on Friday, November 20, 2026. After that, they drop off one by one:

In plain terms: come before Christmas and you get everything, including the postcard scenes in Odori Park. Come in January or February and Odori is over — but the station-front boulevard (about 1.5 km and 220,000 LEDs), Minami 1-jo dori (a 300-meter tunnel of light through 46 gingko trees), Akapla and the Station South Exit are still running, and the new Nakajima Park venue joins in January. The dates above come from the official event outline published by the organizers on July 13, 2026 (official announcement, Japanese).

A note on sources: at the time of writing, several major English-language articles about this event still show last season's dates, and the official English page — while correct on the overall Nov 20 – Mar 14 span — does not list the venue-by-venue end dates or Nakajima Park. The table above follows the Japanese-language official outline, which is the primary source.

2. Lighting hours: 16:30 to 22:00, with two exceptions

Lighting hours are published per venue on the official Japanese site. As of August 30, 2026:

The two exceptions worth remembering: the Station South Exit Plaza stays lit until midnight every night — it is the one place you can see illuminations after a late dinner — and in late December the other big venues extend to 24:00. One caution on that extension: the official venue pages currently list the extension days with weekday labels from last season (for example "Dec 23 (Tue)", which does not match the 2026 calendar), so treat the exact extension dates as provisional and check the official site closer to Christmas. Sapporo is far enough north that by 16:30 in December it is already fully dark — the official pages note that Akapla and the Station South Exit adjust their start time to sunset.

The event is free at every venue. There are no tickets and no entry gates; the venues are public streets, parks and plazas.

3. Nakajima Park: the new seventh venue (January 2027)

For the first time, the illumination expands to Nakajima Park, the large park directly south of the Susukino district. The official outline gives only "early to late January 2027 (planned)" — the venue page still says "coming soon" for dates, hours and contact, and the organizers state that details will be announced around late October 2026. We will update this section once the announcement is out.

What is already clear is the access: Nakajima Park has its own subway station (Nakajima-Koen Station, Namboku Line, two stops from Odori), and a snow-covered park lit up at night is a genuinely different setting from the street venues. If your trip is in January — after Odori has gone dark — this is the venue that makes the detour worthwhile.

4. Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo (Nov 20 – Dec 25)

Sharing Odori Park with the illumination, in blocks 1 and 2, is the Munich Christmas Market in Sapporo — also called the German Christmas Market in some official materials — marking its 25th edition in 2026. Sapporo and Munich are sister cities, and the market does the full German repertoire: mulled wine, sausages, wooden ornaments, stollen.

Unlike the illumination itself, the market is a daytime event too: 11:00 to 21:00, with last orders at 20:45. It runs the same dates as the Odori illumination (November 20 to December 25), so the ideal evening is market first, then the lights. One practical note: at the time of writing, the official English listing for the market still shows the 2025 dates — the dates in this article are from the 2026 official outline.

5. Going by car: the Odori underground car park, in detail

The venues are on public streets in the city center, and there is no event parking. If you are driving — most of our readers are, see renting a car in Hokkaido — the closest large car park to the Odori and Ekimae-dori venues is the Odori underground car park (大通地下駐車場), the same one we cover in our Sapporo Autumn Fest guide. The numbers, re-verified on August 30, 2026 from the operator's official page:

Three consequences for illumination visitors:

First, the 22:00 wall. The Odori venue is lit until 22:00 — and the car park under it closes at 22:00. "Watch the lights until the end, then stroll back to the car" does not work. Park, walk, and be back at the barrier with a margin, or plan a different car park. The late-December 24:00 extension nights and the Station South Exit venue (lit until midnight) are entirely outside this car park's hours.

Second, the evening cap is made for this event. The lights come on at 16:30; the ¥1,000 cap applies to cars entering after 16:00. Arrive just after 16:00 and the whole evening costs at most ¥1,000.

Third, the 5.0-meter length limit. Large rental vans in the Alphard class and camper vans are longer than 5.0 m and will not get in. If that is your vehicle, plan for a different car park — we have not personally verified the alternatives, so we will not recommend one blind.

6. Winter driving and walking on the night you go

The illumination season sits entirely inside Sapporo's snow season — December's average daily low is −4.0 °C and the snowpack peaks around 95 cm in February (JMA 1991–2020 normals). Two things matter on the night:

On the road: rental cars in Hokkaido come with studless winter tires as standard in winter — Toyota Rent-a-Car's Sapporo-area branches fit them from November 1 to May 5 at no extra charge (official schedule, Japanese), which covers the whole illumination season. That handles the equipment; the technique is a different matter, and if this is your first snow-country drive, read winter driving in Hokkaido and winter tyres on rental cars before you go.

On foot: the venues are exactly where Sapporo's iciest surfaces are. The local Winter Life Promotion Council's advice (tsurutsuru.jp, Japanese) is short steps, weight on the whole sole — a penguin shuffle — and extra care at pedestrian crossings, the edges of heated pavement, and subway entrances. The Ekimae-dori venue is a median strip, so you cross a road to reach it; every one of those crossings is polished ice by December. 7. Practical FAQ

Q. Is the Sapporo White Illumination free?

Yes — every venue, all season. The Munich Christmas Market is also free to enter; you pay only for what you eat, drink and buy.

Q. Does it run in snow or bad weather?

Snow is normal — the lights on fresh snow are the whole point. Displays may be switched off in severe weather such as storms or strong winds, so on a rough night check the official site before heading out.

Q. Can I visit by car?

Yes, with planning. The Odori underground car park (8:00–22:00, ¥1,000 cap after 16:00, 5.0 m length limit) covers the Odori, Munich Market and Ekimae-dori venues — but it closes at 22:00, the same time the lights go off, so build in a margin. See section 5 for the full numbers.

Q. Which venue should I pick if I only have one evening?

Through December 25: Odori Park, and walk the Munich Christmas Market in the same visit. From late December: the station-front boulevard until February 11, then Minami 1-jo dori, Akapla and the Station South Exit Plaza until March 14 — and Nakajima Park in January.

Q. Is it manageable with small children or a stroller?

The venues are city-center pavements and plazas, generally well cleared. The realistic enemy is cold and ice, not distance — keep the visit short, dress everyone in layers, and prefer the compact venues (Akapla, Station South Exit) over the full Ekimae-dori walk.

Summary — plan by end date, not start date

Everything starts on November 20, 2026. What matters is when things end: Odori Park and the Munich Christmas Market close on December 25; the station-front boulevard runs to February 11, 2027; Minami 1-jo, Akapla and the Station South Exit go to March 14; and Nakajima Park joins for January only. Lights are on 16:30–22:00 at most venues, until midnight at the Station South Exit. If you drive, remember the two numbers that matter: ¥1,000 (the evening cap if you enter the Odori underground car park after 16:00) and 22:00 (when both the Odori lights and that car park close).
